Mission of the Institute

The Institute of Health Sciences (IHS) was established in 2000 with a mission to improve health and health care practice through applied research in the health sciences. The Institute acheives its' mission in three ways:

  • Boundary spanning communication and collaboration - we undertake activities which help create lateral links and networks across schools, faculties and Greater Manchester NHS organizations; we promote collaboration and communication, and help organise health sciences resources more effectively to make the most of both internal and external opportunities for development.
  • External identity and presentation - these activities help the health sciences research community in Greater Manchester present itself to research funders, government, and other stakeholders. The IHS helps demonstrate our research strengths, our critical mass and the range of expertise available, as well as the achievements and impact of our work undertaken here.
  • Collective voice and action - activities help to bring health sciences researchers together as a collective voice to present cases for investment in key areas, formulate strategic plans which engagement from wider partnerships and coalitions.

Members of IHS

The Institute has a growing number of members drawn from across the University, Primary Care, Acute and Mental Health NHS Trusts, all working in partnership to develop opportunities.
